The title of this course is Technology and the Role of the Educator. Instead of focusing on the technology, we begin this course with a focus on the teacher/ educator. What is the Role of the Educator? There has been a paradigm shift in education over the last few years, from lectures to project-based work, from grading to use of rubrics. Then we add in specific competencies from the QEP, curricular requirements and administration items specific to the school we realize that the role of the teacher is fairly complex.
Mind-map - Role of an Educator
Our first group task is to go to the following site at Mindmeister (you will need to be added as a participant) and create a small mind map (brainstorm) around the question " What is the role of an educator"? Use your experiences and from this, teachers you have worked with. Once in the class we will bring all these together into a single file and generate themes of teacher roles in education today.
Our second layer is to discuss the 'technology' aspect which will provide support to educators in order that they may complete the roles outlined.
Our final component is considering your current role(s) what tools, resources or applications would you require in order to support your teaching and classroom environment. This is really establishing your needs assessment and then as a group we will look at some of the ideas and incorporate many into this course outline.
Our next task is to look at 21st century skills, QEP reform implementation issues and use of competency evaluation components in order to better understand the complexities of the teacher's role in meeting the needs of digital natives.
In second part of the session we will explore some of the various tools you will be using and make sure we establish the framework so everyone can work in this collaborative environment. This will introduce Google docs and spreadsheets, Google groups, wikis and blogs, which will be continued in the afternoon session.
Finally we will discuss in more detail the collaborative group project , the research essay and readings.
